James Macavoy. Mark Strong, heroic bloodshed....Hell yeah

We should have some more for you but as I mentioned in the previous post drinkey poo's have kinda got in the way so until next time...

Fifteenth Show (or The Movie Show Is Stuck Up Your Chimney)

Hey Folk's
The fifteenth show will be broadcast live tomorrow Thursday 20th Dec at 20:00 GMT.

Kind of obvious to say this but tomorrow's show will be Christmas themed. Surprising huh?.
Now we've gone more for movies which are set during X-mas or have a prominent scene set at Yule time. Lots and lots of cheese filled tunes with the odd non-Christmas track chucked in to keep things fresh.

As always we'll be covering new and current releases and Victorian Monkeys got a pure classic lined up for his cult corner (just remember never feed him after midnight). Banter might be a bit on the grumpy side this time (in true Christmas tradition) as it's BSR's Christmas drinkey time this evening, so if you're in the Bradley Stoke area tonight pop into the Orchard (Toby Carvery) and say hi.

Anyways we hope you all have a truly great Christmas and if you do any Movie watching over the festive season and you have the time send us a mini review.

Fourteenth Show (or Let The Movie Show Be Your Fantasy)

Hey Folks,
Fourteenth show goes out live tonight 6th Dec at 20:00 GMT.

Obviously the big release this time around is The Hobbit: An unexpected journey, so to tie in this evenings show will be drawing it's tunes from fantasy movies.
We've had to cast the net a bit wide on this one, from classical Fantasy (such as Wizard of Oz) to modern set Fantasy (Pan's Labyrinth, Donnie Darko) just to get enough music. Even so we'll be trying something a bit different tonight in that half the tunes will be taken from film scores as opposed to just songs. Mainly we've gone for this as many Fantasy films have iconic theme tunes and we're sure hearing them again will bring a fond smile to your face.

Also tonight we'll be introducing the first ever BSR Movie Show competition, in which you'll be able to win promotional goodies from the recently released Seven Psychopaths. Full details for the competition will be posted here on the blog later today.

We'll as usual be diving into the murky waters of current and upcoming cinema releases, while no doubt becoming ludicrously sidetracked at the drop of a hat (a hat you say? Well yes the Monkey does indeed wear a hat in the studio, a hunting cap to be precise, in the vain hope of bringing a more gentlemanly air to proceedings). The other Monkey, the one of the Victorian persuasion, is back with more cult classics, this time with a touch of Chinese magic (well American Chinese, but hey...).

So lots to look forward to, tune in via the 'BSR Listen Live' link to the left and don't forget to get in touch either during or after the show.
Enjoy.

Thirteenth Show (or the Movie Show Is Made In Britain)

Hey Folks,
Lucky show thirteen goes out live tonight 22nd Nov at 20:00 GMT.

As you can no doubt deduce by the post title this evenings show will have tunes pulled from British movies (yay for patriotism. Or something).  So expect our usual excellent taste and diversity (and most likely some truly awful aural experiences as well, anyone remember Shampoo?).

Same show format as always, info on upcoming and current releases, news, idiot banter and Victorian Monkeys look at a Cult Classic. This time he's gone for one of the quintessential movies about British-ness.

Tune in through the BSR listen live link to the left and we hope you enjoy the show.

Trailers, Trailers, Trailers

Hey Folks,
It's trailer time again!

First off a bit of Arnie in The Last Stand. Kim Jee-woon's English language debut, he's one hell of a director so I'm optimistic about this one.

Next up is Jeymes Samuels' western They Die By Dawn, a 30min indie short. It looks mighty impressive.

Thirdly we have the teaser for Alan Moore's Jimmy's End. Looks interesting and is the first in a proposed series of shorts from the grouchy God.

Up for a bit of nastiness then check out Elijah Wood in Franck Khalfoun's remake of Maniac. Absolutely NSFW.

Want even more brutality, this is British special effects genius Paul Hyett's directorial debut, The Seasoning House.

And finally the incomparable Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmasters. Film of the year? Just might well be.

Enjoy and let us know which ones you're looking forward to.

Cheers to the fine folks over at twitchfilm.com for the original uploads.

Updates, Apologies and Greg Christie's Fear and Loathing

Hey Folks,
First off you may have noticed the disturbing lack of updates on the blog lately, this is due mainly to my internet access only working sporadically over the last few weeks. My first thoughts were that it was my router playing up and after numerous back and fourths between myself and the so called customer service department of my ISP, I finally convinced them to send a replacement. Lo and behold after setting it up yesterday, no more problems.
So apologies on the lack of content lately and I'll be doing my utmost in the coming weeks to make up for it.

So onto the second item; Last show we mentioned that Greg Christie from twitchfilm.com had contacted us to let us know he had a new series of Fear and Loathing articles about to start over at Twitch, and I was supposed to have had a link up for you folks after the show, obviously due to the previously mentioned connectivity issues this never happened, so without further ado here's the link to the first part:

http://twitchfilm.com/2012/10/fear-loathing-the-2012-philadelphia-film-festival-part-i-boozie-movies-returns-and-goes-to-hell-lite.html

To my mind Greg's the best film related journalist/writer/satirist around at the moment and if you've read his work before then you'll know why. If you're new to his stuff then I'll say only that you're in for a treat and a maybe a bit of "what the hell did I just read?".
The man really should be writing modern noir novels (hell for all I know he already is) as his work kinda puts me in mind of Charlie Huston and believe me that's high praise.
Anyways check out the link and let us know what you think. Enjoy.

Twelfth Show (or The Movie Show Learns To Read)

Hey Folks,
Twelfth show broadcasts live tonight 8th Nov at 20:00 GMT.

For tonight's musical theme we were looking at going all vampy to tie-in with the new Twilight (can't believe I just wrote Twilight, quick, must find my med's) but seeing as we did a horror themed show last time for Halloween, we decided instead to go for novel adaptions (yes we know categorizing Twilight as a real novel is pushing it a bit).

We've chosen a fairly wide range of adaptions, a few of which you might be surprised to learn were actually books at all.

As always we'll keep you up to date with the latest local releases etc. and ol' Victorian Monkey will be back with another Cult Classic and yep he's gone for a Vamp Movie adaption, one which the current fang loving audience might not be aware of. It's a good one.

Eleventh Show (or The Movie Show is under your bed)

Hey Folks,
Eleventh show goes out live tonight 25th October at 20:00 GMT.

Tonight's theme should be pretty obvious as we're getting close to Halloween, so all tonights tunes will be pulled from 'spooky' movies. Alright more horror than spooky but you get the idea.

Expect our usual great taste in tracks, info on current and upcoming releases, Victorian Monkey's Cult Corner and as always our highly informative and amusing banter (o.k. we know that's pushing it).

Tenth Show (or The Movie Show Feels Like A Woman)

Hey Folks,
Tenth show tonight the 11th October 2012 and we'll be going out live at 20:00 GMT.

We were a bit stuck on a theme for tonight (happening a lot lately, please distributors start putting out some stuff we can tie into easier) until some bright spark mentioned to us that today would be the very first ever United Nations International Day of the Girl. Unfortunately said individual was under the impression that Girl meant Woman, so with that in mind we based tonight's theme on movies that featured women as the main protagonists.
Of course we've since learned that by Girl it actually means Girl, as in under eighteen and that the International Day of the Woman was back in March (our fault we really should have checked this earlier). So as it's too late to change our track listing we'll be dedicating tonight's show to both International Day of the Woman (only a few months late) and International Day of the Girl.

For further info on both check out:
http://www.internationalwomensday.com/
http://dayofthegirl.org/
http://www.unwomen.org/about-us/

Our apologies for the mix-up but as to the show itself you can expect our usual tasteful (um, insane) mix of tunes (still light on the eighties, two shows in a row we must be losing our touch), info on currently playing and upcoming movies, Victorian Monkeys Cult Corner and our legendary (right word?) inane banter.

Stoker and Vanishing Wave Trailers

Hey Folks,
Two new trailers for your perusal.

First up we have Stoker, the first English language movie from Park Chan Wook, the master film maker behind Oldboy, Thirst, Lady Vengeance etc. Looks to be every bit as good as his Korean offerings.

Secondly we have the Lithuanian Sci-Fi Vanishing Waves. This ones been getting a fair few positive reviews and a couple of festival awards to boot. One to keep an eye out for.

Thanks to the folks at twitchfilm.com for the original uploads.

Ninth Show (or The Movie Show is a Scientific Marvel)

Hey Folks,
Ninth show goes out live tonight 27th Sept 2012 at 20:00 GMT.

We decided for this show to tie the theme into the release of Looper, so the music tonight will be pulled from movies with a Sci-Fi theme (why sci-fi in general and not time travel, well we couldn't come up with enough tunes from time travel movies alone).

We've got a good diverse mix lined up for you tonight with possibly a bit less eighties cheese than usual (shocking I know!), we've even got a Morning Masume track thrown in for good measure, for those of you who don't have the foggiest who they are then we'll just say you're in for a treat (although maybe that's not quite the right word).

Victorian Monkey will be back with another Cult Classic review and as always we'll be letting you know what's currently out and upcoming in the local cinemas. Tune in through the BSR listen live link to the left and we hope you enjoy.

Eighth Show (or The Movie Show Goes Back To School)

Hey Folks,
Apologies for the lack of updates, its been a hectic two weeks. Anyways on to the important stuff, the next show goes out live tonight Thursday 13th Sept at 20:00 GMT.

Yet again there's not much being released in the next two weeks which we could comfortably tie a theme into, so Jim, in a rare moment of inspiration, suggested we instead link the theme into kids returning to school after the holidays. So tonight for your listening pleasure the tunes will be based off of Teen School Movies.
Now we've been pretty broad on our definition here so expect tracks from Films such as the classics of John Hughes to Horrors and Comedies . Basically if it stars teen characters and features a school we've considered it fair game.
Sad to say though, no blues track this week as none of the soundtracks included one, so I've dug out some swing instead, just for something a little different. It would have been very easy to turn this one into an entire eighties night but we've been good and avoided the urge (well almost avoided, it wouldn't be right without at least a few servings of cheese) .

Victorian Monkey (Matt D) will be joining us once again (and hopefully for every show from here on out) and will have another Cult review on hand.

So as always tune in via the BSR listen Live link to the left and let us know your thoughts either during or after the broadcast.
Enjoy the show.

Seventh Show (or The Movie Show Is Above The Law)

Hey Folks,
The seventh show goes out live tonight Thursday 30th August at 20:00 GMT.

To tie in with the upcoming releases of 'Dredd' and 'The Sweeney', the theme for this show is Cop Movies and we've got tunes lined up from from the sixties all the way up to today (with the usual pit-stop in the ol' decade from hell).

Also joining us tonight will be another monkey, Victorian Monkey in fact (aka Matt D), who will be providing the first installment of a new segment entitled 'Cult Corner', in which Victorian Monkey will be reviewing a cult film from yesteryear which ties in with the chosen theme for the show.

Hopefully with the new monkey onboard we can start sounding at least a little more knowledgeable.

Anyways usual rules, tune in via the 'BSR listen live' link to the left (while I remember, we will finally be switching to FM transmission in the new year, so it will be easier for you folks to listen in) and we hope you enjoy the show.

British Film Registry

Hey again Folks,
Another item we mentioned tonight was the newly formed British Film Registry. This is looking to replicate the function of the National Film Registry over in the states which each year archives important American films and acts as a sort of chronicle for American cinema through the ages.

Now you'd have thought that the BFI would have set this up years ago, but no, and so the good folks over at whatculture.com are, from what I can tell, setting it up themselves. So head on over to :
 http://whatculture.com/british-film-registry
and get voting for your top five British films, as well as your top two British film personalities.

This is something that I believe will become very important in years to come.

George lazenby and the case of the missing Email

Hey folks,
We mentioned George Lazenby on the show and neither Jim or myself were able to think of any movies other than Bond in which he starred.

One of our regular listeners Matt D responded to this letting us know that ol' George appeared in three Raymond Chow flicks including 'the Man from Hong Kong' with the legendary Jimmy Wang Yu, as well as appearing in a shitload of Emmanuelle films.  Unfortunately due to the 'wonders' of the interweb thingy the email didn't get to us until after the show, which is why I've mentioned it here.

And I have to say I'm rather embarrassed here due to actually owning 'The Man from Hong Kong' on vhs. I reckon all my film knowledge must be getting pushed aside and replaced with Anime trivia, really must do something to rectify this.

Anyways thanks to Matt D for putting us right and next show we should sound at least a little more knowledgeable as Matt will hopefully be joining us as a regular guest reviewer focusing on cult classics that tie in with each shows theme.

Cheers for listening in tonight and we hope you all join us again next time.

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning - Trailer

Hey folks,
Seeing as the theme for the next show is focusing on the cast of The Expendables 2 I thought I'd share the new trailer for Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, as it features Van Damme, Lundgren and the current undisputed greatest western action star, Scott Adkins (if you don't know who Adkins is then shame on you, get yourself onto Youtube and do a search for some of his fight scenes), all of whom feature in Expendables 2.

The movie comes from the same team who brought us the previous installment in the Universal Soldier franchise which was quite surprisingly a decent little flick, so hopes are high that this will be up to the same standard. Judging by the trailer those hopes might well be confirmed.

Anyhoo check it out and hopefully this might be the beginning of Scott Adkins being offered slightly higher profile leading roles, until some forward thinking producer finally has the balls to cast Adkins as the main protagonist in a much, much bigger production.

Sixth Show (or The Movie Show's Call to Action)

Hey Folks,
The next show will broadcast live Thursday 16th August at 20:00 GMT.

I was going to go with 'the movie show is not expendable' as the secondary title for this one, but I quickly decided that no good would come of baiting the God's (also known as our Station overseers).

Anyways as you've no doubt deduced from the use of  'expendable', this time the theme will be based around the impending release of The Expendables 2, or to be more accurate, its cast.
Obviously there's a fair body of work to draw from here but rest assured only the most deserving tunes will make it onto our play list. Well, almost all the most deserving tunes, this is the Movie Show after all, and no show of ours would be complete without another descent into the nine circles of eighties Hell.

So usual rules apply, tune in via the 'BSR listen Live' link to the left and we hope you enjoy (or at least tolerate) our inane ramblings, movie preview/news and as always the diverse mix of music.

Oh, also, I'll try to be more awake this time ;)

Morning Re-broadcast

Hey Folks,
seems that for the foreseeable future the show will be re-broadcast the following day from 08:00 -10:00 GMT. So if you missed the live broadcast the evening before its a perfect opportunity to catch up, or if you caught the show, a chance to relive the glory.

We would just like to point out though, that this mornings broadcast was cut out halfway through the majesty of 'Lesbian Seagull' and that we were in no way responsible for the excruciatingly awful Grease track that replaced it.

Also we'd like to take this opportunity to apologize for the delayed start of last nights broadcast. The circumstances of which were beyond our meager control.
A big thank you goes out to our colleague Charles, who at the last minute, when all hope was lost and thinking nothing of his own safety stepped into the breach and produced the show. He truly saved our asses.
Incidentally, not only is Charles a peerless producer, he is also a mighty fine presenter and you can catch his show every Saturday evening here on Bradley Stoke Radio. Chances are if you like the diverse range of tunes we ourselves play, you'll enjoy his show.

Anyways, thanks for tuning in and we hope you all have a good relaxing weekend.

Fifth Show (or The Movie Show Gets Animated)

Hey Folks,
the next show will be broadcast live tonight Thursday 2nd August at 20:00 GMT.

As we mentioned at the end of last show (and as I'm sure you can guess from the title), tonight we'll be focusing on tunes pulled from animated movies.
Now thankfully Jim has seen the light and we'll be avoiding anything from Disney and Pixar and will instead be focusing on lesser known and older titles, as well as chucking in a few Anime tracks (about bloody time) and a couple from more recent flicks.
So expect our usual diverse range of tunes with a healthy dose of yet more eighties cheese (we do like our cheese), and as always we'll be keeping you up to date with the latest cinema releases and movie news.

Re-Animator The Musical

Hey folks,
yep that's right, as you can see from the post title the incredible eighties gore/comedy flick has been adapted into a Musical. Stuart Gordon the vastly underrated Director who shot the original movie (adapted loosely from a work by the master himself, H.P. Lovecraft), also directs this stage performance.
What I'm loving most about this is that they've added a 'Splash Zone' for extra audience participation.
Now I bet most of you are thinking "well it sounds awesome and all, but I bet it's only playing in America", well fear not splatter fans as I point you now towards the Edinburgh Fringe Festival:

And for a bit of a taster, here's a review from Joshua Chaplinsky over at Twitchfilm:

Hey Folks, we mentioned Tom Jane's short Film Dirty Laundry on the last show, so I thought I'd whack it up here for your viewing pleasure.
For those of you who don't have a clue what I'm talking about, Tom put together a fan-film to take along to SDCC in which he reprises the role of a comic-book character he played way back in 2004.

Teasers for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel are now up. Footage in both is the same but feature different Narration.

Originally I wasn't sure what to make of this project, mainly due to not being a very big fan of Superman, but after watching these teasers consider my interest piqued. There's a beautiful melancholy feel to these which bodes well for a different interpretation of the Big Blue Boy Scout.

A Quick Guide for New Listeners

Hey Folks,
(really should come up with a new opening, but that requires effort and I'm nothing if not Sloth-like)
Just thought I'd put up a quick guide to the show for those of you who have yet to listen in and are maybe wondering if you might enjoy two hours of our company.

Lets start with the informational side of things, we go into a bit of detail on new movies which are due to be released in the fortnight between shows as well as covering all the major films currently showing. As the show is based in Bradley Stoke (that's in the suburbs of North Bristol for all you out of town folk) we generally focus on releases that will be playing at the Vue cinema Cribb's Causeway. However we do like to branch out and so we try to include more niche films that play at venues such as the Watershed.
Obviously the content of this section depends hugely on the movies being released. We also cover recent movie news we think people will find interesting (well it would be more accurate to say news we find interesting, and as our viewing preferences lean heavily towards the genre side of things we have a bias toward those types of film).

We have a rather large tendency to become sidetracked in our discussions so most of the time we allocate for said discussions becomes more a (hopefully humorous and maybe informative) free-for-all.

We try to split the show 50/50 between talk and music and so far we think (although we're probably wrong) we have a good balance.
As to the music, you may have noticed from the previous posts we go with a theme for each show. And so for an idea of what we play here's the track listing from last show where we focused on horror movies of the mostly eighties variety:

Hard Act to Follow - Diana Devitt - Night of the Comet
Theme from Psycho - Bernard Herman - Psycho
People are Strange - Echo and the Bunnymen - Lost Boys
Dream Warriors - Dokken - Nightmare on Elm Street 3 (The Dream Warriors)
Rock On - David Essex - Devil's Rejects (yeah we know, David bloody Essex, but strangely it's a decent track, world really must be ending this year)
Rainy Rainy Day - Brownie McGhee - Angel Heart
Cry Little Sister - Gerard McMann - Lost Boys
True Faith - New Order - American Psycho
Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash - Dawn of the Dead (remake)
Space hopper - Julian Cope - Return of the Living Dead pt 2
Fright Night - J Geils Band - Fright Night
Blue Moon - The Marcells - An American Werewolf in London
Fall Guy - Rollins Band - Demon Knight
Thriller - Michael Jackson - Thriller

As you can see a pretty wide ranging mix, (although we go for a bit less cheese most show's)  we try for a bit of diversity in the tunes we use. You may be wondering why there's no actual film scores in the list (except Psycho), that's because we like to use them as backing for the talky sections.

O.K. maybe not as quick a guide as I intended, but hopefully it gives you a better idea of  what we're about and we look forward to you listening in.

Hey Folks,
During my many hours sat hunchbacked at my PC everyday I came across a purely magical new invention, the Email.
So it is with great joy that I now share my wonderful new discovery with you all:

bsrmovieshow@hotmail.com

Contact us at any time to share your thoughts on the show, what you like, what you don't like (both in terms of movies and the show itself), or just to tell us to stop babbling and get on with the music.
Messages during the show will be greatly appreciated and you'll have the chance to be mentioned on air (woohoo).
Also we're very much looking for theme suggestions for upcoming shows and mini reviews on recent movies you've seen. Please be aware when writing mini reviews that we will be intending to read them on the air, so if we have to bleep out half the words it won't work too well (or alternately it could be rather amusing).

Anyways get in contact with us, it gets lonely in the studio.

Fourth Show (or The Movie Show Rises)

Hey Folks,
Hope you've enjoyed the shows so far. The fourth show goes out live tonight Thursday 19th July at 20:00 GMT.

As you can probably guess from the alternate title, the theme for this show will be connected to The Dark Knight Rises. So what we've decided after hours (nay, days) of exhaustive debating is to go with tracks pulled from the past works of TDKR cast.
So you can breathe easy in the knowledge that your ears will most likely be spared the incredible amount of cheese we aired last show.

As usual listen in through the listen live link you'll find to the left and let us know your thoughts either during or after the show.

http://twitchfilm.com/reviews/2012/07/fear-loathing-comic-con-boozie-movies-reviews-the-dark-knight-rises.php

Now most of the piece is scene setting for the (I believe piss-take/fake) review, but it's absolutely hilarious with more than a few entirely apt observations and insights into the geek scene/mindset.

Without doubt the best bit of film 'journalism' I've read all year.

Show Number Three (or Revenge of the Movie Show)

Hey Folks,
hope you enjoyed the second show, the third show will be broadcast live this coming Thursday 5th July at 20:00 GMT.

This time we'll be pulling tunes from Horror Movies, mostly of the eighties variety (before you groan at the prospect of an unending wave of hair-rock and speed metal, we'll also be playing tracks from Horror Movies of other decades, even we can't survive that much cheese).
And the reason for this horrific slew of melodies, well it's Friday 13th the following week and as there's not really any films coming out in the next couple of weeks that we could tie a theme into, we thought we'd be able to get away with a tenuous link to the 13th.

As usual we'll be delving into the latest and current releases for the North Bristol area while hopefully keeping you entertained with our attempts to sound knowledgeable and intelligent (everyone needs a goal in life).

Show Two (or The Second Coming of The Movie Show)

Hey Folks,
thanks to all those who tuned in last time, hope you enjoyed the experience. Our second show will be broadcasting live tonight 21st June at 20:00 GMT.

For this show we'll be focusing on tunes pulled from Comic-book adaptions, from superhero comics through to less well known indie publications. So hopefully a little something for everyone (no Howard the Duck though, even Jim's not that cruel). And as usual we'll be bringing you info on the latest and upcoming Cinema releases in the North Bristol area.

Listen in through the link to the left and as before let us know your thoughts after.

First Show - Reminder

Hey Folks,
just a quick reminder about our first show tonight broadcasting live at 20:00 GMT.

Hope you'll listen in and let us know your thoughts after. Sure there will be a fair amount of criticism, as we don't really have a clue what we're doing (and we're both idiots). But hey we'll make the best of it :)

Welcome - First Show

Hi folks and welcome to the Bradley Stoke Radio Movie Show Blog.

Our goal is to provide an entertaining show featuring the latest movie reviews and information on upcoming cinema releases within the North Bristol area. Musically we will be playing a mix of tracks pulled from classic to contemporary soundtracks, with the odd non movie related tune thrown in to keep things interesting.

Your hosts for this phantasmagorical aural delight will be current BSR jack-of-all-trades and fill-in host extraordinaire Jimmy D and myself the recently moniker-ed Research Monkey (apparently being that I'm currently the researcher for the show automatically bestows upon me the status of monkey).
The first show will be going out live June 7th at 20:00 GMT and you can listen in by clicking the link over on the left. To celebrate the release of Prometheus we'll be drawing a fair bit of music from Sir Ridley Scott's body of work, so expect tunes from BladeRunner, American Gangster, Gladiator and others.

We hope you enjoy the show and let us know your thoughts afterwards, either here through the blog or by contacting the station directly (which incidentally you can also do during the show).

Happy listening.
